This blog is about my road-camping trip with my German shepherd dogs, Leben and Erde, from 19 Sept to 13 Oct 2012, which took us 3700 miles from DC to NY (and Beech Mountain), and then onto seven different provincial and national parks circling the Great Lakes. Just before Thunder Bay, Ontario, Leben became paralyzed, so we returned by way of Minnesota and then east to DC.

The Defender

The inquisitive among my readers (all four of you) are probaly wondering what purposes the Defender serves besides getting us to where we want to go. Good inquiry. Actually, there are five other purpose, the most important being getting us home again, extricating us from undesireable circumstances. The other four are: a nice place to string the kitchen roof (tarp) from when trees are not handy, as shown in this photo i just took; a place to recharge the batteries for the seven devices i have with me ( sat and cell phones, two cameras, one of which my faithful readers already know about, the ipad, the beet headphones, and my mobile vehicle battery jumper); a very nice place to warm up in in the morning if all else fails; and the source of all treats for the dogs, as far as they are concerned.

By the way, on the kitchen table, that nice autumnal center piece is the courtesy of the last hour's work on the part of the nearby trees and not the local Whole Foods, of which i have seen none since DC. On the table you will also find a bowl of fresh fruit from the nearby trading post (goods for money) and the ubiquitous bowl of dog treats, in this case yams, which i would not hesitate to consume myself if push came to shove. (when it comes to getting treats, push AND shove are Erde's modus operandi, so i learned that from her.)
