This blog is about my road-camping trip with my German shepherd dogs, Leben and Erde, from 19 Sept to 13 Oct 2012, which took us 3700 miles from DC to NY (and Beech Mountain), and then onto seven different provincial and national parks circling the Great Lakes. Just before Thunder Bay, Ontario, Leben became paralyzed, so we returned by way of Minnesota and then east to DC.

Headlight saga, and now camera

1230...ed discovers left headlight not working. Odd, because it was just replaced last year. Other headlight work, and so are brights.

1300...ed pulls into terry's auto service in matawawa ontario. Terry agrees to moved ed to top queue so ed can get on way. Terry does not stock light needed but fortunately ed though ahead and had a spare. Ed tracks down a napa store 30 miles up the highway so ed can get another spare.

1600...terry replaces headlight but now neither headlight works. Terry cannot work on it as it would require another hour that terry doesn't have. Moreover, he is reluctant to work on land rovers as they are unique and too complicated for him.

1610...ed figures it might be the fuse so he goes into his "garage" and finds spares he brought along. Ed replaces fuse but neither light works. Ed decides to get to camp quickly before dark. Fortunately, ed had done his homework and planned to stay at samuel champlain prov. park 10 miles up the road.

1730...ed settles into nice site 6 at park, overlooking a cliff, with a steep path from ed's site to the riiver.

1830...After setting up camp and making dogs dinner, ed takes dogs for walk down steep path to riiver. Too steep to keep dogs on leash, so ed lets dogs off. Leben decides great place to ake a poop, so he does. Afterved picks up poop, he turns around and erde is nowhere in sight. She had dashed up the steep slope. Ed pursues her blowing whistle and erde comes running back.

1840...before returning to camp, ed decides to take a photo of view from camp over cliff onto river. Ed turns power on to his one-year old casio zoom and lens comes out only partially and LENS ERROR message appears. Ed tries a dozen times but same thing happens. Ed rcalls that the same thing happened to his one-year old olympus in 2001 when he was on his trip to alaska with leben and erde. Fortunately, ed has user manual with him and consults. In case of a LENS ERROR message, manual says, send camera to nearest Casio support center. Nearest Casio support center, ed discovers, is in san francisco, 4000 miles away. Ed puts this issue aside for evening. Fortunately, ed has ipad which takes photos, but no zoom.

1900...ed feeds dogs, makes his own dinner (v8 juice, soup, sardines, 1/2 fig newton -dogs shared the other half - and fruit cocktail)' cleans up, puts things away for night, takes shower.

2035...ed starts to writes blog. After his, he will consult Defender workshop manal and parts manal, which, again, fortunately, ed has with him. The only other possible non-serious problem could be a faulty power relay switch. Fortunately, ed has two spares with him and if they are not for the headlights, perhaps he can pick up some at the napa store tomorro in north bay. Ed decides to stay in camp more than the one night originally planned and try to resolve headlight problem. There is no land rover dealer in north bay, but there may be in thunder bay, 800 miles farth north. One option is to continue trip as planned and drive only during day (which is ed's rule anyway, but sometimes unavoidable) and take defender into landrover repair there for 3000 mile service and headlight problem. Other options are being contemplated. Hopefully, it is the relay switch, because the next possible source of the problem is faulty wiring.

2046...ed lays out plan for tomorrow...visit napa shop for spare light and maybe relay switches, buy new camera, buy tuna fish for dogs, do laundry.
